GT Pro Series

A false-start for Wii racing games.

Review

Nintendo have been very careful to make sure that all types of gamers are catered for during the launch of the Wii. There are lots of titles across all genres, all showing off fancy ways to use the Wii Remote, but for me, as an avid racing game fan, I looked towards GT Pro Series and its bundled wheel attachment. I am now here to warn you all not to make the same mistake!

After spending the best part of the last two decades playing every racing game I can lay my hands on, the prospect of one with a completely new control method was one I couldn’t pass up. Unfortunately, it only takes about half a lap for you to realise that there’s something rotten about it. There is a split second delay between your moving the Remote and your car starting to turn, which means you’ll spend all your time oversteering and trying to correct it.

It also looks and sounds awful. The appearance can’t decide if it wants to ape the realism of Gran Turismo or the cel-shading of Auto Modellista, opting instead for somewhere in the middle. The result would have looked bad in the previous console generation and is so far behind the pack it’s not funny.

It would seem that Nintendo’s need for a driving simulation available at launch far outweighed the need for it to be anything close to decent. No matter how much of a racing game fan you are, don’t buy GT Pro Series or you’ll regret it.
