Rambo: The Video Game

On the rails shooter? more like off the rails!

Review

I've never wanted to use the phrase "what is wrong with gaming today is..." but in the case of reviewing this title I'm afraid the time has come to say it.

So here goes.

What is wrong with gaming today is that lightgun supported games cannot exist any more on a home console. mainly because of the different types of TV's in the home, Plasma, LCD, LED e.t.c. it would be too hard to make a gun to work with all TV's so to combat this some console developers have come up with ways around this issue, like the Wii remote, or Playstation eye toys.

Now although these work to some extent they are no good for shooters, because even if you point the Wii remote at the middle of the screen thats not where the cursor will be because of where you've positioned the sensor bar. And as for the Playstation camera, do you really want to guy a silly gun attachment for a remote style thing while pointing it at your TV with a stupid blue ball on the end of it which makes your gun look like its going some sort of charging shot from the game R-Type?

One of my favourite types of games is lightgun shooters. And as a man in my early 30's I have come to accept that I probably wont be able to play a good lightgun game again unless i go to Blackpool and play on a dedicated arcade machine.

There are some great classic lightgun games that you can pick up fairly cheap as long as you still have an old tv lying around the house, games like Time Crisis, Point Blank, Virtual Cop, e.t.c. But do you remember going round to your mates house to play these games and your mate only having 1 gun? what happened was you ended up with a stupid controller playing a lightgun game. and we all know that doesn't work. take Die Hard 2 from the Die Hard Trilogy, or even some of the console ports of Mad Dog McRee.

And after that small rant it brings me to Rambo on the Xbox 360, An on the rails shooter which uses a controller.

The on the rails parts do seem to have a Time Crisis cover system feel to it. with its pop out, shoot a few times and duck back in gameplay. Theres a quick reload function like Gears of War which gives you 200% ammo increase. which you really need or your gun runs out within seconds. And to help you out because you're using a controller for a lightgun game they have put in a small snap on to the enemy effect with the cross hair. It also has a lot of quicktime events including entire levels of them which start out cool. But then got very boring very quickly

Graphically its not too bad. but it does seem to suffer from beautiful backgrounds to bad character design. so the AI really doesn't look like it belongs in the game.

If you're a big fan of Rambo then I'd probably say pick it up when it gets a bit cheaper as it has a lot of the elements of the films in there.
